The Management Transformation: How to Support and Empower New Leaders

Duration: 60 minutes

Studies show that a full year after transitioning into a leadership role, nearly 2/3 of new managers are struggling. These employees had been superior individual contributors before their promotion.

So what happened? How does a once-promising, high-potential employee become a dud manager?
Insufficient training and support.

Many companies overlook the critical step of teaching first-time managers how to get results through others. They think “this employee knocked it out of the ballpark on their own, surely they can help a team do the same”. And while the “multiplier effect” (the concept that a manager can duplicate their own success in a team) is a real and valuable phenomenon, it doesn’t happen automatically. It must be taught.

New managers need an entirely new set of skills in addition to the talents they already have. They must learn how to teach processes rather than perform them. To establish goals rather than exceed goals set for them. Support rather than compete. Develop accountability rather be held accountable. Set the pace rather than outpace.

The danger of letting new managers “sink or swim” can’t be overstated--managers have the single greatest impact on their team’s motivation, productivity and retention. Allowing a new manager to flounder doesn’t just endanger the manager, it puts the entire team at risk.
